Kosovo has returned to the polls for its third snap election in just over a year, as growing voter frustration and prolonged political instability continue to challenge Europe’s youngest nation.
Polling stations opened across the country on Sunday following months of political uncertainty triggered by the failure of lawmakers to elect a new president. The crisis deepened after inconclusive parliamentary elections in February 2025 left Kosovo without a stable political solution.
Many voters expressed disappointment over the repeated elections, arguing that political parties have prioritized power struggles over addressing national issues. Citizens are increasingly concerned about rising living costs, economic challenges and the lack of political consensus.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s Vetevendosje party emerged as the largest political force in previous elections but failed to secure a parliamentary majority strong enough to end the deadlock. Attempts to establish political stability were further complicated by opposition resistance and disagreements over key state positions.
Political analysts believe the latest snap election may not resolve Kosovo’s ongoing governance crisis, warning that the country could remain trapped in a cycle of political uncertainty unless major parties reach a compromise.
The repeated elections are also placing a financial burden on the country. Authorities estimate that Sunday’s vote alone will cost more than €10 million, while the cumulative expenses of multiple national and local elections have increased significantly over the past year.
Economic concerns remain a major issue for voters. Rising prices, declining business activity and continued youth migration have fueled public dissatisfaction, with many Kosovars questioning whether another election will bring meaningful change.
Observers describe the current situation as one of the most significant political crises Kosovo has faced since declaring independence from Serbia in 2008.
Polling stations will remain open until evening, with exit polls expected shortly after voting ends. Preliminary election results are anticipated later on Sunday.
