CID sends 35 pieces of evidence for DNA testing as police await forensic report
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today said the actual perpetrators behind the killing of four members of a family in Rangpur city will be brought to justice through a fair investigation.
Rangpur has never seen such a killing before, the minister said, adding, “We cannot accept this incident in any way. There have been many discussions about the killings, but new leads are emerging as the investigation continues. That is why it is taking some time.”
The minister made the remarks during a sudden visit at Rangpur Medical College Hospital around noon. He is the president of hospital management committee.
“What matters most to us is to identify the actual culprits and anyone else involved in the killings through a fair investigation and bring them to justice,” he added.
“Hopefully, within a few days, we will be able to submit a charge sheet following a proper investigation and ensure that the trial is completed as quickly as possible,” he said.
Jinnat Ali, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan DB and investigating officer in the case, said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had collected 35 pieces of evidence from the crime scene.
The evidence was sent to the CID forensic laboratory on Thursday for DNA testing, he said.
“Once we receive the forensic report, we will be able to scientifically verify the statements given by the two youths arrested in connection with the killings. We are waiting for the forensic report,” he said.
“We are obtaining various information and data while investigating the killings. These are being examined with due importance. However, we are not disclosing the information at this stage in the interest of the investigation,” Jinnat Ali said.
Police recovered the bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, from their house in the Daspara (Machhuapara) area of Rangpur city around 11:00pm on August 22.
Police said the four were strangled to death on the morning of August 21.
Two youths from the same area, Siddhartha Das, 19, and Mugdha Das, 23, were arrested early on August 23 in connection with the killings.
The slain teacher’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, lodged a murder case against unidentified persons with Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station on August 23.
