A high-level delegation from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will visit New Delhi next week to participate in the biannual Director General-level border talks with India’s Border Security Force (BSF).

The four-day meeting is scheduled to be held from June 8 to June 11 and will be the first top-level border dialogue between the two forces since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government assumed office in February this year.

The Bangladesh delegation will be led by BGB Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, while BSF Director General Praveen Kumar will head the Indian side.

According to officials familiar with the agenda, the discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing a range of cross-border issues, including border management and transnational crime.

A key issue expected to be raised by Bangladesh is the killing of Bangladeshi nationals along the border. Dhaka has repeatedly expressed concern over such incidents, which remain a major point of contention between the two neighbours.

Indian officials are expected to discuss attacks on BSF personnel and Indian citizens by alleged miscreants, illegal infiltration and the repatriation of undocumented migrants, cross-border smuggling, activities of Indian insurgent groups, and border infrastructure-related matters, including the construction of single-row fencing and drone intrusions.

The upcoming talks follow the previous round of DG-level discussions held in Dhaka in August 2025 during the tenure of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The meeting comes amid renewed emphasis on border security from New Delhi. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has recently reiterated a “detect, delete and deport” policy regarding illegal infiltration.

The development also coincides with the installation of a new BJP government in the Indian state of West Bengal under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The state shares more than 2,200 kilometres of border with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh and India share a 4,096-kilometre international border, of which around 860 kilometres remain unfenced due to geographical and other constraints.

Officials said both sides are expected to sign a Joint Record of Discussions on June 11 at the conclusion of the meeting.

The DG-level border talks between BGB and BSF have been held twice a year since 1993, alternating between Dhaka and New Delhi.
