The government has decided to upgrade all existing 50-bed upazila-level hospitals across Bangladesh to 101-bed facilities to improve public access to healthcare.
Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain announced the decision today at the Secretariat, noting that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already directed relevant ministries to begin implementation.
Key Highlights:
Scale of Project: Eight upazila health complexes have already been upgraded to 100-bed hospitals. The remaining 492 facilities will be expanded to 101 beds.
Logistics & Staffing: The Public Works Department will assess infrastructure needs, while the health ministry will manage manpower and medical equipment. Each facility will include two physiotherapists.
New Specialized Hospitals: Five child hospitals in Barishal, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Cumilla are expected to open by this December, requiring a total of 1,475 staff members.
Investigation Into Newborn Deaths Responding to queries about the recent deaths of six newborns at Ad-din Medical College Hospital, the minister stated that the probe report is due by the end of the day.
“The toughest action will be taken based on the findings of the report,” Husain warned.
