Police have arrested two youths in Rangpur on charges of attempting to rape a seventh-grade schoolgirl, recording an obscene video of her, and blackmailing her by threatening to spread the video.
They were arrested on Tuesday afternoon (September 22) from the Senpara and Kamarpara areas of the city. The arrestees have been identified as Salman (20) and Swapno (21). Both are students.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station under Rangpur Metropolitan Police, AKM Nazmul Kader, confirmed the matter.
Citing the Case Statement (FIR), the OC stated that on September 2, Salman took the seventh-grade student, who was known to him, to an empty house belonging to his friend Swapno. According to allegations, an attempt was made to rape her there. Failing to commit the rape, Salman recorded an obscene video of the girl, the lawsuit mentioned.
Later, when the matter came to light, the student was blackmailed with threats of releasing the video on social media. Salman communicated with her in various ways through his personal account and at one point demanded money after sending the video to the student’s mother, police said.
Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a case with Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur. Police subsequently conducted raids and arrested the accused from their respective residences.
On Tuesday afternoon, the accused were produced before the Rangpur Metropolitan Cognizance Court. The court denied them bail and ordered them to be sent to prison.
Meanwhile, in the same court, the victim student recorded her statement under Section 22 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, recounting the details of the incident.
