Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday attended the opening session of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The high-level general debate of the UNGA began at the General Assembly Hall in the morning, with heads of state and government and senior representatives from different countries in attendance.
Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, attended a traditional welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for world leaders and their spouses.
The breakfast was held at the UN Headquarters ahead of the opening session of the General Assembly.
At the beginning of the event, world leaders and their spouses joined Guterres and his wife for a photo session. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also joined them with Dr Zubaida Rahman and exchanged greetings with the UN secretary-general and his wife before posing for photographs.
The prime minister later joined the opening segment of the 81st UNGA session at around 9am at the General Assembly Hall.
According to his itinerary, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 24.
It will be his first address to the UN General Assembly as Bangladesh’s prime minister. He is expected to deliver his speech in Bangla, following the country’s longstanding practice.
During his visit to New York, the prime minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings and high-level courtesy meetings with the leaders of several countries and heads of international organisations.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 8, 2026, and will continue until September 7, 2027. The theme of this year’s session is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
