Two brave fishermen in West Bengal risked their lives to rescue an elephant calf washed away by the strong currents of the Teesta River after chasing it for nearly 3 kilometers.
The incident took place on Tuesday (22 September) in the area adjacent to Spur No. 12 of the Teesta River under Malbazar subdivision in West Bengal, India. A report by news outlet NDTV highlighted a video of the incident that went viral on social media, along with detailed information about the event.
According to the report, two fishermen were fishing in the Teesta River on Tuesday. At that time, they noticed a small elephant calf being swept away by the river’s strong current. Seeing the danger, without giving a second thought to their own safety, they immediately turned their boat towards the elephant calf.
Braving the strong push of the river’s current, the fishermen rowed their boat for nearly 3 kilometers to reach the calf. Using all their strength, they managed to pull the calf out of the water onto the boat and brought it safely to shore.
After bringing the elephant calf to land, the fishermen promptly informed the local forest department. Upon receiving the news, a special team from the forest department arrived at the spot immediately, rescued the calf, and provided the necessary assistance to reunite it with its mother.
