Mariam’s Death: Police to show MP Gazi Nazrul and his wife arrested in the morning following formal procedure

Following the recovery of the hanging body of Mariam Khatun (19), second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency, at the NAM Building in the capital, her father has filed a case alleging abetment of suicide. Gazi Nazrul and his first wife have been named as accused in the case.

Both are currently in police custody, though they have not yet been shown formally arrested. Police stated that they will be shown arrested on Monday morning after completing the necessary formalities.

Ibn Mizan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Tejgaon Division under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter to All Crime TV on Sunday night.

When asked if Gazi Nazrul had been shown arrested, Ibn Mizan said, “No, he hasn’t been shown arrested yet. He is a Member of Parliament. There are some formalities tomorrow morning. We will show him arrested after maintaining those.”

He also mentioned that the case was filed under Section 306 of the Penal Code for abetment of suicide.

Earlier on Sunday, police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat in the NAM Building in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Gazi Nazrul and his first wife were subsequently taken into police custody for questioning.

Along with the police, members of the CID and PBI collected evidence from the scene. Following the inquest report, the body was sent to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Police stated that it cannot be confirmed prior to investigation and the autopsy report whether Mariam’s death was a murder or suicide.

Gazi Nazrul had identified Mariam as his second wife. The matter came into discussion last July after a video of their private moment went viral on social media. Later, Gazi Nazrul stated that he married Mariam on June 17. Following that incident, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party.
