Police have shown Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency, and his first wife Maksuda Begum arrested in a case filed over abetting the suicide of the MP’s second wife, Morium.
Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division Police Md Ibne Mizan confirmed the matter around 1:00 am on Sunday night (September 20). The victim Morium Khatun’s (19) father filed the abetment case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum, and the plaintiff’s brother-in-law (the driver) have been named as accused in the case.
Earlier on Sunday night, police recovered the hanging body of the MP’s second wife, Morium, from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 of the NAM Building under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital. Upon receiving information, police reached the spot, recovered the body, and took MP Gazi Nazrul and his first wife—who were present at the flat—to the police station for primary interrogation. Meanwhile, the deceased’s father arrived at the station and filed the case, after which police showed them arrested.
It is worth noting that Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected Member of Parliament for the third time from the Satkhira-4 constituency on a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nomination in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. Earlier this year, after a video showing personal moments with a young woman went viral on social media, the MP claimed that the woman in the video was his second wife, Morium Khatun. Subsequently, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party on July 22 over charges of ‘moral misconduct’ and wrote to the Speaker and the Election Commission to take necessary measures regarding his parliamentary seat. Following these events and news of the suicide, Jamaat supporters actively commented on social media stating that the leak of the personal video ultimately led to Morium’s tragic end.
