Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Tuesday urged Bangladeshi students awarded Indian Council for Cultural Relations scholarships to act as ambassadors of their country while studying in India.
He encouraged them to excel academically, explore India’s diversity, build lasting friendships, and strengthen people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and India.
Trivedi made the remarks at a send-off ceremony hosted by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka for students selected for ICCR scholarships for the 2026–27 academic year.
More than 120 scholarship recipients attended the event. They will soon travel to India to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in disciplines ranging from engineering and pharmacy to fine arts and music.
This year, 541 Bangladeshi students were awarded ICCR scholarships from more than 7,700 applicants.
Of them, 500 received the Subarno Jayanti Scholarship for programmes in STEM and non-STEM disciplines, while 38 received the Lata Mangeshkar Dance and Music Scholarship for courses related to music, dance, and culture.
Three others were awarded the ICCR Quad Scholarship to pursue undergraduate STEM programmes in India.
The recipients were selected through proficiency tests and interviews conducted by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and India’s assistant high commissions across Bangladesh.
“India is waiting for you with open arms,” Trivedi told the students, adding that studying in the country would allow them to experience its cultural, linguistic, and social diversity.
He also thanked their parents for nurturing their talents and placing their trust in India for their children’s higher education.
The ICCR scholarship is a flagship programme of the Indian government for meritorious Bangladeshi students seeking undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral education in India.
The scholarships cover tuition and other university fees, while recipients also receive monthly stipends for living expenses.
The students will study at institutions including the Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, University of Delhi, Visva-Bharati University, University of Mumbai, and Anna University.
