The District Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested a university student named Rabiul Islam alias Roni (21) from Netrokona on charges of creating 93 fake National Identity Cards (NIDs) using the photo of a single individual with different names, addresses, and dates of birth.
Based on confidential information from the National Security Intelligence (NSI), he was caught red-handed during a drive conducted around 7:30 PM on Tuesday (15 September) at a variety store in Dutta Market of the Moktarpara area in Netrokona town. The arrested Rabiul Islam is a resident of Ganggair village in Madhupur Upazila of Tangail and a fourth-year student of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at Daffodil International University. He had recently gone to Netrokona to visit his wife.
According to DB sources, the DB team conducted the raid at the Moktarpara shop when Rabiul went there to print the fake NIDs. During the search, 7 printed fake NIDs containing different names, parents’ names, dates of birth, and ID numbers were seized from him—each featuring the photograph of the same person, differing only in shirt color. Additionally, 6 papers containing the back sides of printed NIDs with the same photo and different addresses were seized. Subsequently, upon examining his mobile phone, soft copies of 80 more fake NIDs were recovered.
Following his detention, a case was filed against him under the National Identity Registration Act, and he was sent to jail through the court on Wednesday (16 September) afternoon. Sub-Inspector (SI) Haider Ali Rana of the District DB has been given charge of investigating the case.
Regarding the incident, District Detective Police Inspector Debangshu Kumar Deb stated that during the search, a total of 93 fake NID copies and information were seized from Rabiul and his mobile phone, all of which used the same photo while keeping the personal details and identity numbers different.
Regarding legal aspects and the Election Commission’s reaction, Netrokona District Election Officer Mohammad Tofael Hossain said, “As per rules, there is no scope for a single person to have multiple NIDs, and any duplication of information is automatically caught by the Election Commission’s server. The Election Commission regularly files cases over such incidents of fraud. Falsifying someone else’s information or photo is a very serious offense. If proven guilty in a case filed under the National Identity Registration Act, the law provides for imprisonment for a maximum of two years, a fine of BDT 40,000, or both.”
