In the three months from April to June of the current year, the number of millionaire accounts holding deposits exceeding BDT 1 crore in the country’s banking sector rose by 5,077 to reach 141,562, with total deposits in these accounts increasing by BDT 16,498 crore.
According to the latest data from Bangladesh Bank, the total number of deposit accounts in the country’s banking sector stood at 186,384,588 at the end of June this year. Among these, the number of accounts holding more than BDT 1 crore in deposits reached 141,562, up from 136,485 at the end of last March.
As per the central bank’s figures, the total deposits in accounts holding over BDT 1 crore stood at BDT 859,162 crore at the end of March. By the end of June, that deposit amount grew to BDT 875,660 crore. This means that within a span of just three months, total deposits in these millionaire accounts increased by BDT 16,498 crore.
Although the number of millionaire accounts and overall deposit amounts increased, the picture of deposits at the individual level remains entirely different. At the end of June, the number of individual-tier millionaire accounts stood at 40,701, holding total deposits of BDT 90,131 crore.
Earlier, at the end of March, the number of individual accounts with deposits over BDT 1 crore was 40,630, and the total deposit amount in those accounts was BDT 91,352 crore. Thus, during the three months from April to June, while the number of individual-level millionaire accounts grew by 71, the total deposit amount actually decreased by BDT 1,221 crore.
An analysis of banking sector data reveals that despite the drop in individual-level deposits, the overall growth in millionaire accounts and total deposits was driven primarily by significant fresh deposits credited to the accounts of various public and private institutions.
