Government to Recruit 100,000 Healthcare Workers, 80 Percent to Be Women: PM

To deliver primary healthcare services across the country and protect maternal and child health, the government has launched a major initiative to recruit 100,000 healthcare workers, with nearly 80 percent of the recruits being women.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made this key announcement while delivering his address as the chief guest at the international conference ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026,’ organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) in the capital city of Dhaka on Saturday (October 3). He stated that the government is actively working to recruit 100,000 healthcare workers to deliver primary medical care, essential health counseling, and proper referral services directly to households at the grass-roots level. Placing special emphasis on women’s empowerment and maternal and child health, 80 percent of the total recruits under this government initiative will be female health workers.

Highlighting the government’s overall action plan and priorities in his speech, the Prime Minister noted that the newly elected government, having assumed office with a massive public mandate, is moving forward with a specific five-year plan to implement the people’s mandate. The primary priorities of the government are safeguarding national interests, maintaining policy continuity, ensuring economic stability, and swiftly executing institutional reforms. He further noted that the time has come to move beyond mere promises and proceed directly to implementation.

Underlining social protection for marginalized and disadvantaged communities, Tarique Rahman highlighted the Family Card, Farmer Card, and Health Card initiatives. He explained that social safety net programs have been structured so that the poorest and most vulnerable segments of society receive priority in the initial phase. As part of this effort, financial assistance is being delivered directly to mothers in every household through the ‘Family Card’ initiative.
