A case has been filed against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman over allegations of creating chaos, obstructing government duties, and physically assaulting an airport security official at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport following a dispute over luggage and trolley shortages.
The incident unfolded on Thursday (October 1, 2026), when passengers arriving from Medina on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-338) grew furious over delays in receiving their luggage amid heavy overcrowding. When Group Captain S.M. Ragib Samad, Executive Director of the airport, arrived at the counter to de-escalate the situation, Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman allegedly verbally abused him, threatened to push him out, and made obscene remarks regarding the then Civil Aviation Minister. Meanwhile, as his associates began recording videos in the restricted area, Security Supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin intervened. Enraged by the intervention, Akhtaruzzaman physically assaulted and hurled abuse at him. He also reportedly tossed away Zamzam water bottles belonging to fellow passengers and engaged in aggressive behavior toward Biman representatives.
Following the chaotic incident, Airport Security Official Md. Shahriar Alam Sojib filed a case against Akhtaruzzaman at Airport Police Station on Friday (October 2, 2026), citing charges of assault and obstruction of official duties. Confirming the filing of the case, Kamrul Hasan Talukdar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Airport Police Station, stated that a thorough investigation based on the FIR has commenced, and appropriate legal action will follow upon completion of the probe.
It is worth noting that after being expelled multiple times from the BNP for breaches of party discipline, the retired army officer formally joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on December 13, 2025.
