The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) failed to submit the investigation report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi to the court today as scheduled. Consequently, the court has deferred the deadline once again, fixing November 5 for the report submission—marking the 130th time the submission date has been postponed.
Wednesday (September 30) was scheduled for filing the probe report in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam. However, as PBI could not present the findings on the set date, the court designated the new deadline.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam of the Prosecution Department under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the matter.
On February 11, 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi were brutally murdered in their rented apartment at Paschim Rajabazar in the capital. Sagar Sarowar was the news editor at Maasranga Television, while Meherun Runi served as a senior reporter for ATN Bangla.
Following the tragic killings, Runi’s brother, Nousher Alam, filed a murder case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Initially investigated by local police, the case was subsequently handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of the DMP and later transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
A decade after the incident, the responsibility for investigating the case was handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). The agency officially received the case documents from RAB in November last year.
