Police have arrested a man named Abu Hanif (33) in Mohanganj, Netrokona, on charges of raping his wife’s cousin under the promise of marriage. He is a father of two.
He was arrested on Wednesday (September 23) night and produced before the court on Thursday, according to police.
Abu Hanif is the son of Abul Kashem of Bakharpur village under Maghan Siadhar Union No. 4 in Mohanganj Upazila. The complaining young woman is currently six months pregnant, sources revealed.
Mohanganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Hafizul Islam Harun stated that the suspect was promptly arrested and forwarded to the court on Thursday.
According to the case details, Abu Hanif frequently made romantic proposals to his wife’s cousin. At one point, promising to marry her, he took her to Sylhet, where he allegedly rented a house and engaged in a physical relationship with her.
Later, the young woman discovered she was pregnant. Upon informing Hanif of the situation, she was allegedly subjected to physical and mental abuse.
The complaint further stated that Hanif repeatedly attempted to take her to a hospital to abort the pregnancy. On the night of September 13, when she pressured Hanif at his village residence to register their marriage, he grew enraged and physically assaulted her.
Following these events, the young woman filed a rape case against Hanif at Mohanganj Police Station last Tuesday. Police subsequently arrested him on Wednesday night and sent him to court on Thursday.
