The 37-year-old suspect was detained on Saturday on the island of Crete, where he was reportedly employed at a hotel. Greek police said the man is believed to have connections with individuals recently arrested in Cyprus on terrorism-related charges.
In an official statement, police alleged that the suspect had received training from Hamas and was involved in activities linked to extremist networks. Investigators are currently examining his communications, contacts and movements.
According to local media reports, authorities suspect the man may have been planning an attack targeting an Israeli cruise ship scheduled to arrive in Crete next week. However, officials have not yet confirmed the alleged target.
State broadcaster ERT reported that police also searched an apartment rented by the suspect in central Athens. During the operation, investigators reportedly recovered laboratory equipment and chemical substances that could potentially be used in the manufacture of explosive devices.
The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns across Europe over potential extremist threats and cross-border terrorism activities. Greek authorities said investigations are ongoing and additional details will be released as the inquiry progresses.
Security agencies are working closely with international partners to determine whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a broader network.
