A family’s journey back to their residence in Gazipur ended in tragedy as a horrific road accident claimed the lives of four members of a single family spanning three generations—including a pregnant woman—along with three others, leaving seven dead in total.
The fatal crash occurred on Friday (October 2) around 1:15 PM near the Bangladesh Bank building in the Akua Bypass area of Mymensingh city. A high-speed Rajib Paribahan bus coming from the opposite direction rammed head-on into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw traveling from Nandina toward Mymensingh. The impact reduced the auto-rickshaw to a twisted heap of metal, killing the driver and all six passengers on the spot.
Six of the deceased hailed from Ranagacha and Sharifpur unions under Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. Among them, four members belonged to a single family from Dori Hamidpur Bhatipara village under Ranagacha Union: Rashida Begum (70), her son Mofazzal Hossain Lebu (50), a construction worker by profession, Mofazzal’s married daughter Morjina Akhtar (25), and Morjina’s five-year-old son Minan.
The three other victims were identified as Akram Hossain (45) and his wife Mamata Begum (38) from Badechandi village under Sharifpur Union, and the auto-rickshaw driver Sujon Miah (45) from Bir Gobindabari village under Ranagacha Union.
According to police and family sources, Mofazzal Hossain Lebu, who lived in the Hotapara area of Gazipur, had arrived at his ancestral home in Nandina on Thursday with the intention of taking his mother, his two-month pregnant daughter, and his grandson to live with him. Around 11:30 AM on Friday, the family boarded the auto-rickshaw to travel to Mymensingh city, planning to board a Gazipur-bound bus from there. The tragedy struck before they could reach their destination.
Ismatara, a relative of the deceased Mofazzal, shared through tears that Lebu, who supported his family through daily labor, lost his loved ones in a single instant, leaving the family entirely devastated. News of the tragic accident cast a pall of gloom over the village, with grieving relatives inconsolable.
Local residents alleged that reckless driving by Rajib Paribahan buses has claimed at least 18 lives across nine separate accidents over the past 20 months. The latest tragedy resulting in seven more deaths sparked intense outrage across the region and on social media platform networks. Following the incident, regular bus operations for Rajib Paribahan on the Jamalpur–Muktagacha–Mymensingh route were temporarily disrupted, prompting transport operators to reroute Dhaka-bound buses from the Bojrapur counter in Jamalpur city. Local residents have demanded a thorough investigation into the tragic accident and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
