A compromise agreement has been reached between the prosecution side and Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament (MP) Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over abetment to suicide. Executed with Mariam Khatun’s father, S.M. Masum Billah, the agreement states that the plaintiff’s family has no objection to Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, being granted bail.
On Wednesday (September 30), Mariam’s father, S.M. Masum Billah, appeared before the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah and submitted an affidavit on behalf of the defense. The court recorded his statement, as confirmed by Dhaka Metropolitan Court Public Prosecutor Omar Farooq Farooqui and defense counsel Mahbubur Rahman.
According to the compromise deed, Mariam was the second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam. Following her marriage, she had been living harmoniously alongside his first wife, Maksuda Islam.
The court documents indicate that Mariam committed suicide at her Dhaka residence between 3:00 PM and 5:30 PM on September 20. Her father learned of her suicide after arriving at the residence around 6:30 PM, following a phone call from Gazi Nazrul.
Since the incident took place at his son-in-law’s residence, Mariam’s father filed a case under Section 306 of the Penal Code at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station out of suspicion, naming Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam, and three others.
The parties subsequently reached a settlement. The compromise document explicitly notes that the plaintiff and his family members have no objection to the defendants being granted bail. Furthermore, both parties agreed to maintain cordial and familial ties going forward.
Additionally, both sides agreed to cooperate as necessary in the pending legal proceedings. The document further states that the agreement was signed voluntarily, consciously, and without any coercion.
The compromise deed was notarized by a Public Notary on September 29.
