Banned Awami League Leader Abdul Wahab Among 15 Detained in Pabna

Fifteen leaders and activists of the banned Awami League, including Abdul Wahab, president of the party’s Sujanagar upazila unit and a former upazila chairman, have been detained by the Pabna District Detective Branch (DB) over alleged preparations for a procession and subversive activities in Pabna city.

They were detained around 6:30am on Wednesday, September 30, in front of Indira Mor on Abdul Hamid Road in Pabna city. Apart from Abdul Wahab, the identities of the other detainees were not immediately available.

Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of the Pabna District DB, confirmed the detention. He said police had information that the group was planning subversive activities in the city.

According to the DB officer, the group arrived in the city in a microbus and was preparing to hold a procession as part of the alleged plan. Acting on confidential information, DB personnel conducted an operation and detained them.

The detainees were later sent to Pabna Sadar Police Station for legal action, the officer said.

The latest detention is reportedly the third time Abdul Wahab has been detained since August 5.

Police previously detained Wahab from the Mathurapur area on February 2, 2025. When he was being taken into a police van, local Awami League leaders and activists allegedly forcibly took him away. Eight police personnel were injured in the incident, according to police.

Police later arrested Wahab again on February 5, three days after he was taken away.

After being released on bail, Wahab and his supporters allegedly attempted to become active again in Awami League activities in the Sujanagar area, according to police.

On the night of April 23 this year, police conducted an overnight operation in Mathurapur and detained 21 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League, including Wahab. The detainees were released on bail several weeks later.

Wahab and 14 others were detained again on Wednesday morning over the alleged preparation for a procession in Pabna city. Further legal proceedings are being handled by Pabna Sadar Police Station.
