Customs intelligence officials have seized 81.50 litres of foreign liquor in excess of the duty-free baggage allowance from the luggage of two passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The estimated market value of the seized liquor is Tk 1.63 million.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said the liquor was seized during operations at the airport’s Green Channel from Tuesday morning (September 29) until night.
According to the CIID, passenger Roman Mikhailov arrived from Dubai on Emirates flight EK0584. His baggage was scanned while he was crossing the Green Channel. A subsequent search found 78.50 litres of foreign liquor of various brands in his luggage.
As the passenger was carrying a foreign passport, he was entitled under the applicable baggage rules to bring one litre of liquor duty-free. The remaining 77.50 litres were therefore seized.
Later that night, the baggage of another passenger, Samiul Islam, who arrived on Turkish Airlines flight TK0712, was scanned. Customs officials found another four litres of foreign liquor of various brands in his luggage. The liquor was seized while he was crossing the Green Channel.
The CIID said a total of 81.50 litres of liquor, beyond the permitted one-litre allowance, was seized in the two incidents. The estimated market value of the seized liquor is Tk 1.63 million.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate said operations are continuing at the airport’s Green Channel and other risk-prone points to prevent smuggling and misuse of baggage facilities through intelligence-based operations, passenger profiling and surveillance.
