O-Level Student Was at the Wheel in Baridhara Construction Worker’s Fatal Crash

Gulshan Police Station has retaken an O-Level student into custody after analyzing CCTV footage that confirmed his direct involvement in the fatal run-over of a construction worker by an errant private car in the capital’s Baridhara area.

The victim, a 24-year-old construction worker named Mehedi Hasan, tragically lost his life at around 5:00 PM yesterday, Tuesday, when a speeding, out-of-control private car ran over him while he was resting on the sidewalk of Road 1 in Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene intercepted the vehicle, apprehended the teenager inside, and immediately handed him over to the police. However, following questioning on the night of the incident, police released the teenager into the custody of his uncle.

Following the tragic incident, the victim’s brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case with Gulshan Police Station as the plaintiff. Although the car’s driver, Akash Marak, was named as the accused in the case, no mention of any juvenile was included in the initial complaint.

Subsequently, CCTV footage capturing the incident spread across social media and caught the attention of law enforcement. Upon analyzing the video, police identified the teenager in the driver’s seat of the crashed private car, confirming his direct involvement in the fatality.

The CCTV footage clearly showed that after running over the young man on the pavement, the private car came to a halt upon crashing into a lamppost. The teenager, wearing a black t-shirt, stepped out from the driver’s side, while a middle-aged man in a shirt got down from the other side. As an angry crowd attempted to assault them, police rescued the teenager from the spot.

Addressing the initial release of the teenager from the police station, Inspector (Investigation) of Gulshan Police Station, Ismail Hossain, said, “He was taken into custody to protect him from falling victim to mob violence at the hands of the agitated public. After questioning, he was handed over to his uncle’s custody later that night.”

However, following a review of the CCTV footage, police recovered the teenager from his Gulshan residence. Confirming the matter, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gulshan Division Police, Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Khan, stated that the news came to his attention, after which police analyzed the CCTV footage and established the teenager’s involvement. He was subsequently brought back to the police station from his residence, and the juvenile in conflict with the law was taken into police custody.

According to information obtained from Gulshan Police Station, the accused teenager is an O-Level student at an English-medium school in the capital’s Gulshan area. His father is a Captain at Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and the car involved in the crash was registered under his mother’s name.

The deceased construction worker, Mehedi Hasan, hailed from Sonaray village in Domar upazila of Nilphamari district. Meanwhile, the primary accused driver in the case, Akash Marak, has been absconding since the accident, and police have seized the damaged private car.
