A court in Rajbari has sentenced a youth named Milan Sheikh (19) to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Runa Khatun (30), wife of an expatriate, in Pangsha upazila. The court also fined him BDT 50,000, in default of which he will have to serve an additional year in prison.
Judge Md. Yousuf Hossain of the Rajbari Special District and Sessions Judge Court and Family Appellate Court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday afternoon (23 September). The convict, Milan Sheikh, was present in court when the verdict was delivered.
Milan Sheikh is the son of Khalil Sheikh from Muclidah village under Khamardangi in Pangsha upazila. It has been reported that the trial of two other accused in the case will be conducted in the Children/Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal as they are minors.
According to case documents, Runa Khatun, wife of Qatar-based expatriate Anisur Rahman, was murdered on the night of 19 August 2023 in Muclidah village. The following day, police recovered her body with her legs tied from the courtyard of her residence.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother filed a murder case with Pangsha Police Station. Upon completing the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against three individuals in court. Following lengthy hearings and testimonies, the court sentenced Milan Sheikh to life imprisonment on Wednesday.
